Useful Information about having an MOT.

To often an MOT can be failed on very minor issue, many are easily checked and fix ahead of time. Here are a list of MOT checks that can help you get your vehicle ready for inspection:

1. Lights & Indicators

There are a whole array of light that need to be checked including: Headlight, Main beam, Turning Indicators, Hazard Indicators and do not forget the all important license plate light.

2. Brake lights

Best done as a two person job, ensure that when the brake pedal is depressed, all brake lights on the vehicle turn on. Also ensuring that when the pedal is released they turn off.

3. Tyres

Ensure the the tyre is running the correct pressure and no obvious damage is visible. A more advance check is that the tread must not be less than 1.6mm, in a continuous band around the central 3/4 of the tyre.

4. Screen wash

Top up the screen wash and ensure that the fluid jets out correctly on to the windscreen.

5. Car horn

A quick test to ensure the horn is in working order. If defective this would need to be repaired or replaced.

6. Windscreen and wipers

The windscreen; checks for defects larger than 10mm on the drivers side and 40mm on the passengers. Presenting a clean window for the MOT is helpful. Wipers must be operational and clean both the windscreen and rear window effectively.

7. Number plate

Simply: clean, readable (Free from damage or obstruction) and comply with the legal requirements.

8. Seats and seat belts

Seats can be checked to ensure they are in good structural condition. The driver seat once adjusted, need to lock in place securely. All seat belts need to be 100% damage free.
